Mr Joel Melton

Experience: Mr Melton is a specialist knee surgeon. He was trained in the Wessex region during which time he was awarded the FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics followed by the CCT in Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery. He spent a year of fellowship training in knee surgery in Sydney, Australia working at the world renowned North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre with founder of the clinic, Dr Mervyn Cross and his team. Here, he was trained further in all aspects of sports medicine, the management of knee ligament injuries and knee replacement techniques. He has also spent time completing fellowship training in limb reconstruction techniques in Russia and in France. He has attended international training courses and specialist meetings in the USA, Australia and throughout Europe. Mr Melton completed a Masters degree in Orthopaedic Engineering (Cardiff University) and regularly applies his knowledge of biomechanics and engineering to his clinical practice.

Arthroscopic knee surgery Repair and reconstruction of the meniscal and articular cartilages
Reconstruction of knee ligaments
Malalignment and arthritis surgery including osteotomy and knee arthroplasty in young patients
Knee replacement surgery (including total and partial joint replacement and revision surgery)

Research: Mr Melton believes strongly that research improves knee surgery outcomes and has over 80 published papers and presentations about a wide range of knee surgery topics including meniscal repair and cruciate ligament reconstructions, cartilage repair surgery in the knee, synthetic ligaments, ligament injuries, osteotomy around the knee, survivorship of knee replacement and biomechanics.

Personal profile: Born in Cambridge. Now a consultant at Addenbrookes Hospital. Mr Melton enjoys spending time with family and friends. Likes music and plays several instruments. He enjoys all sport and loves getting involved when he can.
